Why Green Can Land You a New Job

green

I remember when Kermit the Frog first sang “It’s not easy being green.” It was such a sad song. Much later, it was actually sung at Jim Henson’s funeral. It is amazing how things have changed – green is now where it is happening.

At our search firm, we have started a whole new sub practice for this category. What surprises me is how many people already have some chops in green and do not merchandise it on their resume. For example:

  • I talked to two people in Detroit who work in hybrids and neither pointed that out in their experience.
  • I spoke last year to some candidates in Ohio who were involved in batteries/power trains for future cars. They saw their work as …

My Resolutions Are Better Than Tony’s

2153537476_2372fa05f6

2009 marks a new start for me. Resolutions are probably a good idea. I promise a status update by the end of January. We’ll see how resolved I am to see these through.

1. Be punctual. Keep a decent sleep schedule too.

2. Keep a work schedule. My most productive semester, I used Covey’s 7 Habits scheduler. Got a 4.0, thank you very much.

3. Work out religiously. I joined Bally’s last summer. Since winter hit, I’ve been making excuses because of the cold. Brad Pitt, Fight Club, is my inspiration.

4. Devote more money towards my savings. And put a serious dent in those student loans.

5. Start the …

Resolutions, Again.

339912423_4416699c99

Maybe if I post my new year’s resolutions on the blog, more will be realized.

1. Lose weight. Get rid of 10 pounds by the end of January. See if you can keep it off through March or even April.

2. Drive the speed limit more often. Gas will not remain cheap for very long; it will definitely be more by summer.

3. Back up all my files and keep a set off site. That includes files that I only update yearly, like Christmas card lists.

4. Look for more ways to cut costs at home and in the office, and when the …

A Piece of Good News for Job Hunters

2337598549_a5ae829a341

In the midst of all the gloom and doom, I can report one good piece of news: interactive. This seems to be one of the only areas where there is true activity.

Right now I am working one VP search for interactive on the client side. I have two more that should kick in during the first quarter. Two days ago I was talking to a candidate for the VP search and they were looking at three other openings concurrently. I have a close contact in Europe who is starting to turn down business for site development; they are too busy.

Social media seems to be very strong too. I have one senior search that I …

10 Tips for Negotiating with Media Vendors

Harry Gold, of the Click Z network, shared these ten tips for negotiating with media vendors today.

I hated media in school. It just seemed too much like math to me. However, thanks to a teacher I had in my entertainment marketing program in L.A., who also happened to be the SVP of Media at Paramount for twenty years, I learned to ask an important question:

Where’s the money?

Enjoy.

8 Presentation Tips

I was talking to a friend of mine who ran across some good tips for presentations. He couldn’t remember where he’d seen them, but those he recalled made a lot of sense to me.

1. State your claim that you will support early in the presentation.
2. Remember, graphics trump words.
3. Drink some water 20-30 minutes before you start.
4. Use contemporary fonts; NOT TIMES NEW ROMAN.
5. Relax, you know more about your subject than the audience does.
6. Don’t hide behind the rostrum or chart; move about the stage.
7. Allow Q&A afterwards; restate every question before answering.
8. Consider taping yourself in rehearsal to fine tune emphasis points.

The U.S. Auto Industry: Marketing or Production Failure?

News of GM’s impeding collapse dominated headlines yesterday. The question for me is: Is this a failure to market or a failure to create a quality product?

My solution, from a marketing standpoint, is to focus on one thing: price. Like I wrote last week, consumers are concerned primarily with value in our stumbling economy.

While viewing a CNN piece on the state of GM, I found it interesting that during a commercial break a 30 second GM spot aired. It was typical of American car commercials: electric guitar in the background, an over-excited voice bragging about dealer financing. Do these advertisers really …

How Internet Advertising Is Changing the Business Model

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="183" caption="Image via CrunchBase"]Image representing Hulu as depicted in CrunchBase[/caption]

I’ve written about Hulu plenty on this site. As a college senior, one without cable, it’s my favorite way to catch all my shows. What started out as a joint venture between NBC Universal and Fox last year has grown into an Internet phenomenon.

Yet, I get the feeling, not many of our readers are aware of it. Hulu is a medium favored by the young and tech savvy. Older X-gen’s probably have never seen the site.

Marketers have been trying to solve the Internet advertising problem for years. Give credit to NBC and Fox for having the gumption to take a stab at it. And, according to an article from today’s Times, …

Skills You Need to Survive as a Marketer

I have a big stack of things that I’ve cut out, written down, or saved for future blog posts. When I am not inspired to write, I dive into this stack for some ideas. Thus I found a thought-provoking article in an old issue of Ad Week that I thought was worth commenting on.

The headline was “The Digital Skills Jobseekers Need to Survive Now.” The article describes five personality traits that help contribute in a digital perspective. The first is the hacker, who is capable of going into a site figuring out how it actually works. They may also contribute code to make it better.

The second is the technologically curious, a person who doesn’t write the code, but will nonetheless go into a place and rummage around to figure out how …
