In the Job Hunt, Use Every Resource Available To You

As far as I can tell, marketers who want agency work have two factors going against them.

  1. Clientele continues to cut marketing budgets
  2. With less client work, agencies have less income, meaning they have less room for payroll
  3. This is of course the equation simplified, but in the face of these two obvious facts, what choices does that leave for someone conducting a job search?

According to an article in Ad Age this week, it means you’ll have to start relying on every resource available to you. More veteran marketers may have to consider new job-hunting resources. Social networks like LinkedIn and micro-blogging sites like Twitter are an example.

For marketers new to the industry, in addition to your Linked In and Twitter profiles, you may have to put extra time into resources more experienced marketers have established, such as a network of former co-workers, supervisors and mentors. It’s also a good time for you to consider reaching out to recruiters. Tony tells you just how to do that in this post.

You’ll also want to up your job-fair attendance. In the past, I haven’t been a huge fan of such events. It can be difficult to hide your desperation, for the experienced and inexperienced alike. I can’t imagine the pressures someone with a family and mortgage must feel in the search for new income.

But, you can walk into a job fair well prepared. Practice your elevator speech. Revise your resume. Refine you unique value proposition. I also recommend reading books on working a room. “How to Talk to Anyone,” by Leil Lowndes has a great chapter discussing the types of tactics that can make you the most memorable person a job fair recruiter meets that day.

The other day, Tony wrote that one of the black holes of unemployment is feeling sorry for yourself. Look, this situation stinks. Plain and simple. My internship ends this summer and I too will be frantically searching for work the next two months. You are not alone in this.

Tony, intern? Ha, I don’t think so Jim. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

I write the blog with Tony. I intern with Carolyn Grisko & Associates, a strategic communications firm, since you asked.

Thanks for commenting. Awesome Web site, btw.
