My Resolutions Are Better Than Tony’s

2009 marks a new start for me. Resolutions are probably a good idea. I promise a status update by the end of January. We’ll see how resolved I am to see these through.

1. Be punctual. Keep a decent sleep schedule too.

2. Keep a work schedule. My most productive semester, I used Covey’s 7 Habits scheduler. Got a 4.0, thank you very much.

3. Work out religiously. I joined Bally’s last summer. Since winter hit, I’ve been making excuses because of the cold. Brad Pitt, Fight Club, is my inspiration.

4. Devote more money towards my savings. And put a serious dent in those student loans.

Resolutions, Again.

Maybe if I post my new year’s resolutions on the blog, more will be realized.

1. Lose weight. Get rid of 10 pounds by the end of January. See if you can keep it off through March or even April.

2. Drive the speed limit more often. Gas will not remain cheap for very long; it will definitely be more by summer.

3. Back up all my files and keep a set off site. That includes files that I only update yearly, like Christmas card lists.

4. Look for more ways to cut costs at home and in the office, and when the …

Why Your First Interview Is Like a First Date

Last Friday I went to an informational interview with Scott Meis, a social media expert I met through Linked In.

Most of my social networking activities have been devoted to that site. I’m almost at 100 connections. Small, I know, but most of those have come in the last few weeks.

Becoming a Leper, a.k.a. Getting Fired

I remember when I was fired for the third time in my career (not the last, either). It was in the early Fall. The season had a strange effect on me. As the leaves fell, so did my self-confidence. It was exacerbated by the fact that the wait was real long in the unemployment office and my wife was doing very well, getting local accolades.

After about three weeks of looking, I found that I walked down Michigan Avenue trying to avoid people I knew. I felt different and like some distressed merchandise. I felt like a leper. The more I felt that way the more isolated I became; the more isolated I became, the worse I interviewed.

A Piece of Good News for Job Hunters

In the midst of all the gloom and doom, I can report one good piece of news: interactive. This seems to be one of the only areas where there is true activity.

Right now I am working one VP search for interactive on the client side. I have two more that should kick in during the first quarter. Two days ago I was talking to a candidate for the VP search and they were looking at three other openings concurrently. I have a close contact in Europe who is starting to turn down business for site development; they are too busy.

How to Be a Better Social Networker

In last Sunday’s Times, an article about Facebook caught my eye. The writer, Randall Stross, asks, “Do you want to ‘friend’ a detergent?

No, of course not. But the deeper question, the one everyone seems to be asking – “How does social networking translate into cash?” – continues to go unanswered.

That’s the question Mark Zuckerberg deals with on a daily basis. The 24-year old owner of Facebook was depicted in GQ’s latest Men of the Year issue as a kid way in over his head.

Coping with Recession: Family First

I remember a guy telling me, a few recessions ago, that he was out of work for three months and he never told his wife and kids! I asked him what he did every day. He said that he took the train into the city and “walked around.” He went to every museum twice and saw a great deal of movies, fitting interviews in between.

“Why,” I asked. He told me he was ashamed that he had been fired and didn’t want his wife to worry.

Five Tips to Survive Unemployment: The Lifeboat Metaphor

There are a bunch of people out of work right now and more will be joining their ranks as the cutbacks continue. I get calls from people who think I have some magic mojo to help them get a job. I only have one piece of advice that I know works every time.

Visualize that your ship has gone down and you and your family are in a life boat at sea. Think of your personal resources as the food and drink that is stored in that lifeboat. Logic dictates that there is no way of knowing when you will be rescued. The only sane thing to do is conserve your resources to make them last as long as possible. So, follow the metaphor a little more….

Marketing Yourself: Advice for Your First Interview

Yesterday Tony gave a guest lecture at Columbia. The class, called Marketing Yourself, teaches students how to do exactly that – market themselves to future employers. Teachers focus on helping students build their own personal brand, with the end goal of placing us in rewarding internships and entry-level jobs.

Tony’s first piece of advice, that we had the distinct pleasure of “entering the worst job market in the past twenty years,” was the exact kind of refreshing no B.S. assessment you can come to expect from Tony.

I think the class appreciated him being honest with us. We read the headlines. We know the economy is in shambles. We are, a little bit, scared.
