Beware What You Blog

November 17th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Keeping Your Job, Web 2.0

It never fails. Anytime I’m in class, Facebook is always brought up. And inevitably, a teacher will advise us to watch what we post online.

This should be old news. There are countless stories of employees getting the ax for posting inappropriate work-related material on the Web.

Last week, the Economist wrote an article “Losing face: a tail of two airlines and their Facebook fiascos.” Seems the cabin crew at Virgin Airlines and British Airways didn’t get the memo. Both companies fired crewmembers for negative comments made on Facebook. The workers complained of cockroaches on planes and smelly passengers.

It’s a simple piece of advice: watch what you post online. Nothing is private anymore. After 9-11, the government made it their right to invade your privacy, damned Patriot Act.

Look at the vetting process the Obama administration is putting staff through. Everything you do is public.

Consider using a pen name if you feel the need to share your less professional side with the online world. You can start your own blog or sign up for any social networking site under your alias. Just be careful. As soon as you hit “post”, that content is no longer yours. It belongs to the site you’re posting on.

Once content is written, it’s THERE TO STAY. You can’t just delete it.
