A New Marketing Blog

May 14th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Our Industry, Web 2.0

Hello. My name is Roland Cailles. I’m a senior marketing and public relations major at Columbia College in Chicago. I also help Tony and Bob, the managing partners at Tesar-Reynes, write this blog.

I’m very excited about blogging and social media in general. When I first started college, I knew I needed to do something that would set me apart from the thousands of other marketing and PR people out there. In short, I needed a niche.

Like other college students I spend the majority of my time in front of my computer. I live on Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn. I even have a couple of blogs. So I thought to myself, why not specialize in something I love doing anyway? That’s how I decided to focus my career on social media.

What I love about social media is that it’s helping to get rid of this notion of the faceless, soulless company. It’s power lies in its ability to connect you face-to-face, so to speak, with the people behind an idea or a product. Companies are taking notice. How many companies have realized the potential of blogging these days? (Just look at the Fortune 500.)

That’s how I met Tony and Bob at Tesar-Reynes. I don’t have to go into all the details of their business. Point blank – They’re a store that sells marketing communication people. But serenading you with the unique selling points of Tesar-Reynes isn’t why we started this blog.

We started this blog because we want you to have a resource. We want you to have a place you can come and read about the latest trends in the marketing communication industry. Coupled with the expert advice of Tony and Bob, this blog will serve as a tool to help you excel your career.

Sure, we’ll have simple advice like tips on job-hunting, interviewing, and resumes. But me personally, I like talking about big ideas. You’ll find my posts to have that type of a flavor to them.

Marketing Communication, In a Nutshell

I love this industry. How many different jobs and business niches can you find for yourself in marketing communication? Media buying, sports marketing, field marketing, – the possibilities are endless.

At your core, you do two things, things you’ve loved doing your whole life. One, you’re a marketer – you sell ideas, or clients, or products.

And two, you’re a communicator. It’s like math for an engineer. Communication is central to our industry. It’s the one skill, in no matter what industry you’re in, that’ll get you far in life. Luckily we’ve all been blessed with the ability.

That’s the power of social media these days. It’s another medium that people can communicate through.
